YOUR CHILD'S FIRST DENTAL
VISIT
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends
that you visit a pediatric dentist no later than your baby’s
first birthday. At Derby City Pediatric Dentistry we make this
first visit a fun, easy and stress-free experience for you and
your child. The first visit introduces your child to our office
and allows us to begin to develop a relationship with the new
patient. This visit also affords us the opportunity to educate
you on the health of your child’s teeth, including how to
prevent cavities. We will also answer any and all questions you
might have about your child’s dental condition and needs.
At the initial appointment we encourage parents to join their
child and participate in their exam. This enables our team to
teach the parents brushing and flossing techniques and to discuss
any dental issues their child may have.
Please do not use the following words: needle, shot, pull
or hurt. Typically a child will not think about these things when
associated with a first visit to a pediatric dentist. Prepare
them by reassuring them it will be a fun time where Dr. Korie
will count and brush their teeth.
Because it is confusing for children when multiple people are
giving directions, we strongly encourage parents to play the role
of a silent observer during their child's dental visits.
This allows the child to take direction from Dr.
Korie and her team. It is also helpful for siblings to remain
at home unless they have an appointment. Dr. Korie and the DCPD
team want parents to have the ability to focus on their child's
visit and the information being discussed.
