A Special Day for Special Needs

At Derby City Pediatric Dentistry, we know that children with autism, special needs, developmental disabilities, physical limitations or behavioral issues may need extra time and special attention from their pediatric dentist.

If you'd like, feel free to call our office to ensure that we are familiar with your child’s condition and how it could affect his or her oral health. Describe the special support your child may need and our staff will strive to provide it.

Dr. Korie at Derby City Pediatric Dentistry looks forward to being YOUR child's pediatric dentist!

Special Helper Tuesdays

Our specially-trained staff reserves certain days of the month to offer longer visits in a sensory-friendly, supportive environment to give your child the attention that he or she needs and deserves. Make sure to ask about these dedicated days when you call Derby City Pediatric Dentistry for your child's appointment.

Please reference our "Special Helper Tuesdays" when you speak to our scheduling team.

What to Expect

At the first visit, we’ll get to know you and your child.
We’ll also educate you on the health of their teeth – including how to prevent cavities from an early age.

This first visit accomplishes three things:

  • It familiarizes you and your child with our staff and our office.
  • It introduces your child (and you) to specific language that the office uses.
  • It allows Dr. Korie to do a quick exam, looking for decay, gum issues or other problems that may affect teeth or growth and development in the future.

Feel free to bring a list of questions to this appointment – we’ll take the time to answer any and all concerns you might have.

Specialized Services & Sedation

Children with special needs—like autism, mild anxiety disorders, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy—may also need special services when seeing a pediatric dentist. Some children may need general anesthesia in a hospital setting, while others may need some mild sedation or just a little extra one on one time. Speak with Dr. Korie about your child’s options, and find out what she recommends. At Derby City Pediatric Dentistry, we offer sedation services when appropriate for children who require it to get proper dental treatment.

Finding the Right Dentist

Finding the right dentist for your child requires balancing your child’s needs with the dentist’s experience. When looking for a pediatric dentist, look for a dentist and team who care for children with special needs and have developed strategies that could help support your child having a positive experience. They should also be able to give you advice on oral health home care, like tips for brushing teeth. Dr. Korie is experienced in caring for the dental health of children with special needs and would love the opportunity to get to know your child and support their oral health!

Talk It Up

Prepare your child for their first visit by reassuring them that it will be a fun time where Dr. Korie will count, brush and perhaps take pictures of their teeth. It’s important for children to think of the dentist’s office as a positive place from an early age.

If they are anxious or have sensory issues, it’s often helpful to prepare them by showing them our office tour in advance – so they know exactly what to expect.

Happy Kids, Happy Parents

Dear Derby City Pediatric Dentistry Families,
By now you are all aware of the measures being taken statewide to slow the spread of COVID-19. I’m writing to update you with the practice protocols Derby City Pediatric Dentistry will follow in the coming weeks or longer. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we determine the best way to keep our families, our team, and the greater population safe.

For now, Derby City Pediatric Dentistry will be closed from March 17, 2020, until further notice, in an effort to flatten the curve and prevent the spread of this virus. If your child has a scheduled appointment during this time, we will be in touch to get your child rescheduled once we have a better idea of when it’s safe to resume normal operations. We are developing strategies to accommodate future additional needs.

This decision was not made lightly, but necessary in order to protect our patients, our team and our doctors after reading updated recommendations by the CDC and OSHA. Dental procedures generate a large number of droplets and aerosols. The latest advice is that our standard personal protective equipment is not effective enough to prevent the spread of the COVID-19, especially when patients are in the incubation period and are unaware they are infected. This is especially unique to our profession as children are being found to be asymptomatic carriers. This means that screening is no longer considered effective in capturing all who may be infected with the virus. Continuing to provide dental treatment and cleanings at this time is just not appropriate when trying to limit this virus.

OSHA has placed dental professionals in the “very high exposure risk” category regarding COVID-19. Current recommendations are that dentists and team members wear N95 masks for dental treatment during this pandemic. However, not only are these masks extremely difficult to obtain at this time but most importantly, they need to be conserved for other professions that are at the forefront of fighting this virus.

If your child has a true dental emergency, there will be a doctor to assist you. Please do NOT go to any Emergency Rooms and call our office first at 502-254-6097.

Rest assured that we are reading scientific and government recommendations, talking with local colleagues, and taking direction from our national organizations. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause, but it is imperative that as a community, we slow the spread of this virus, and that requires extreme measures. We are aiming to help flatten the curve by implementing this policy. We remain committed to the safety of you and your family! Please call us if you have any questions.

We appreciate your understanding as we all try to navigate through this situation.
Stay Home and Stay Healthy!
